Success Thinking: Lessons From a 12-Year Old Girl
There is a young girl in the US who is the inventor of a product called GaBBY Bows – a company that sells product currently in 50 states and 10 countries… at 12 years old (with the help of her mum) she knows more about business than most of the professionals I meet in a year.
There is a common mindset thrown around amongst leaders that to truly succeed and build a multi-million dollar business you need to be at work at least 80 hours a week, forgo holidays and demand just as much commitment from your team. In the meantime, your body suffers, your family suffers, and your business becomes a chain around your neck.
The secret to scale is not working harder. The secret to scale begins with a massive shift in your mindset – leading to significant behavioural change.
The secret to scale is tapping into the exact formula that young Gabrielle Goodwin has used to become ultra-successful school kid. It certainly is not working 80 hours a week – she has tapped into the number one success concept of large companies using a model of micro-franchising her business – i.e. working smarter not harder.
Smarter, not harder - a catch phrase you have heard a lot I am sure, but do you really understand what that means for your business? The foundational principle is what we have been harping on about for years now – systemisation of your business is key. Invest in building out repeatable systems and then hire people to execute the systems.
Tim Ferris paved the way with the ‘4-Hour Work Week’. Love that book or hate it, the premise is sound - shift your thinking from ‘how many hours do I need to work to get rich’ over to ‘how to I maximise the hours I have so that I can do less but achieve more to get rich’.
If your business needs you to succeed then you haven’t got the right systems in place.
Start by asking yourself these three questions:
1. Are you making money even when you are not at work?
2. Do you think the only reason your business is at the level of success it is today is because of you?
3. What do you fear about letting go and allowing it to run without you controlling the entire process?
4. If you quit tomorrow and went and got a job, would you be better off (taking into account finances and lifestyle)?
There are times where hard work and commitment is required to shift the growth into the next phase however this should be never be the norm. The end goal should always be to build teams, processes and systems that get you out of the ‘hard work’ as quickly and efficiently as possible.
